This past weekend, the media incorrectly reported that "commuters lose transit, parking, biking benefits" in the GOP tax reform package. The tax reform legislation, which has been passed by both the House and Senate, preserves section 132(f) of tax law, which is the section of law that provides commuters with a transportation benefit.

The confusion comes from a section of the tax reform package that does eliminate the ability of employers to write off subsidized transit costs. But most transit benefit programs, including those at UCLA, are provided as a pre-tax program. Employers who provide a pre-tax program are not impacted by the change, and will continue to receive payroll tax benefits.
