OrangeLineMetroLast week the Metro Board approved the purchase of 95 electric buses and set a goal of converting their entire fleet from natural gas to zero-emission vehicles by 2030.

This is huge. With 2,200 buses, Metro has the second largest bus fleet in the nation. Its vehicles operate day in and day out over the course of many hours. The challenge will be finding electric buses that can meet Metro's rigorous operational demands.

During the Board of Directors meetings last Thursday, Metro approved contracts to purchase 60 40-foot zero-emission buses from BYD (the same vendor as UCLA's electric BruinBuses) to be used on the Silver Line, and 35 60-foot electric buses for the Orange Line.

The Orange Line will be fully converted by 2020, and the Silver Line will be entirely green by 2021, if all goes according to plan.
