Good news! The southbound carpool lane on the 405 between the 10 and the 90 is finally OPEN, per word of mouth and the blogosphere (LAist, LATimes).

FINALLY.

What’s the verdict so far? Informally, I’m hearing good news. Jumy Rollins, an alternative transportation coordinator here and a South Bay-based vanpool driver says, “The 405 SOUTH BOUND IS AWESOME NOW!!!! We (got) home 20 minutes earlier than usual.”

There is, however, a catch: Traffic volumes are much heavier toward the end of the work week. That’s why Jumy added, “But the ‘big test’ for travel time will be on Thursday and Friday.”

Jumy, please keep us posted!

Meanwhile, according to the LA Times, the northbound carpool lanes will open within the next couple of weeks – perhaps by Thanksgiving.

This is all part of a long-range plan to construct a continuous, comprehensive network of carpool lanes from the I-5 in the SFV down to Orange County.

The next major project: Planning for the construction of a carpool lane on northbound 405 between the 10 and the 101. That project is slated to cost over a billion dollars and is in the design stage.
