UCLA Transportation, UCPD and UCLA Insurance & Risk Management are partnering with Allstate Insurance to host Be Alert Bruins Day on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will be held in Wilson Plaza, and will feature a driver simulator presented by Reality Rides and sponsored by Allstate Insurance. Participants will be able to operate the simulator to experience how texting while driving can have devastating consequences.
Additionally, there will be information booths educating drivers about the dangers of distracted driving and how to avoid them. Information will be shared to help motorists understand why engaging in other activities, especially texting or talking on their cell phones, impairs their ability to drive.
Distracted driving is a deadly behavior that consistently ranks as the number one traffic safety concern. A recent study showed teen drivers were distracted almost a quarter of the time they were behind the wheel. Approximately 71% of young people say that they have sent a text while driving, resulting in thousands of deaths every year. Electronic devices, texting and reading emails were among the biggest distractions.
UCLA is one of the densest campuses in the country, boasting more than 44,000 students and over 31,000 faculty and staff. As we drive on campus and in our own communities, it is extremely important to be aware of our surroundings.
Take a moment this week to assess your awareness level while you are driving. Resist the temptation to engage in dangerous activities behind the wheel. It only takes a few seconds of inattention to result in a life-changing outcome for you, other drivers and pedestrians.
Please join us and pledge to be a responsible, focused driver. Don’t let your phone have the last word. Be Alert Bruins – Stay Alive, Don’t Text and Drive!
