Good afternoon!

I wanted to let you know that the Huffington Post’s college section named UCLA as one of the greenest schools in the nation this afternoon.

Although the caption to this picture highlighted the Native Green program on campus, might I take a moment to thank all of you for what you do to green your commutes? By the numbers (a quick recitation off the top of my head, as reported in the 2010 State of the Commute Report, coauthored by yours truly):

  • The employee drive alone rate is roughly 53%, which is over twenty percentage points lower than the regional average of about 75%.
  • The student drive alone rate is lower, about 26%, but that’s because about 12,500 students live in UCLA housing in Westwood, and another 11,000 students live in off-campus housing in Westwood.

This graph illustrates the wide differences in mode splits between UCLA employees and students compared to the region at large:

You all should be proud of yourselves!
