My colleague Penny overheard two people talking about the upcoming discontinuation of 1(800) Commute, the Caltrans-funded transportation information hotline, while at the market last night.

Don't you worry, though: customers can dial 511 or 323-Go-Metro for their transportation information needs.

Per this Metro press release, the discontinuation of 1 (800) Commute will save CalTrans $800,000 annually. Whoa!

The press release also notes that while 323-Go-Metro is not toll-free, most LA County callers should not incur a charge, particularly because they are likely to be dialing from a cell phone.
