1. Your helmetAlthough helmets are not legally required for bicyclists over 18 years old, it is always better to have some extra protection.

2. U Lock + Chain Lock

3. Water bottle / Hydration pack

Stay hydrated! Always have water with you whether your bike ride is long or short and on both hot and cold days.

4. Headlight and Taillight

Make sure to stay visible on the streets at night. A white headlight and rear, side and pedal reflectors are required by law if you are riding after dark.

5. Basic repair and maintenance kit

A small tool such as a tire lever or a folding multitool comes in handy in times of need. If you are looking for tools that are more bike-specific, feel free to use our bike repair stations around the UCLA campus for quick tune-ups.

6. Mobile phone
It's best to have your mobile phone on you in case of emergency. If you have a smartphone, you can also use it for GPS for navigation, a camera OR you can tweet @UCLACommute to tell us about your bike ride!

7. Windbreaker
A light portable windbreaker can keep you warm if you plan to ride your bike late in the evening or if the weather suddenly changes.

8. Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from UV radiation, especially in our beautiful and sunny Los Angeles weather!

9. Photo ID
Always have some sort of photo ID and contact information on you in case of emergency.

10. Transit Pass

In case the weather takes a turn for the worse or you run out of energy, it's always great to have the option of hopping onto public transit with your bike instead.
